While working on a totally different project, I had this image of my life and by extension everyone else’s or at least those of us who feel our lives shrinking. Begin by picturing your life as a map, now, close your eyes and think of a map of almost anywhere, but for these purposes let’s use the United States.
To the North our lives border OUR IMAGINATION, endless possibilities. Even as we age, a part of us still has the determination and will to do anything we can imagine. We must never give up, never let anyone tell us we are too old to pursue our dream.
To the East lies OUR HEALTH, if we still have it, we must guard it ferociously. Do everything you can to stay vital and active. I finally have to admit my husband is right, ouch, that hurts, I never admit he’s right. He’s always told me, one day I would regret not being a gym rat and he was sooo right. Every time I pick up my grand-daughter my back reminds me, of all those skipped training sessions and excuses not to walk. So go to those exercise classes or yoga or jazzercise but go!
To the West lie OUR BAD HABITS and NEGATIVE THOUGHTS. We can change, it just takes repeating the old Dr. Phil line “how’s that workin for you”, over and over again, until it sinks in. Eventually it will sink in and you will make some adjustments.
And to the South lie OUR ROOTS, to flower every plant needs roots. Don’t forget yours, draw energy and inspiration from them. We need a strong foundation to build a new adventure on, use all those connections you’ve made over the years, let your friends and family help and support you in your quest.
I hope you have the same strange visual kind of mind I have and that you can picture this map thing but if you can’t, think to yourself my future is Canada but my past is Mexico!!!
