I could not wait to wake up this morning and call my brother in Connecticut to tell him about a movie I saw last night. If I have failed to mention it here, my baby brother spent many years in the music business. He was a producer and a roadie and a producer again. He always loved music, I probably could write two or three blogs just on his adventures with people who are household names and some who would like to have been household names. One of my shortcomings as a writer is my reluctance to use other people’s lives and stories to fuel my blog, just imagine if I were to write a book I would be afraid of stepping on someone else’s toes and the book would have to be based on my experience. It is a shame because I have known some very interesting people.
The movie I saw last night was Twenty Feet From Stardom and it was wonderful. If you have seen interviews for it or the trailer, you already know it is about back-up singers and the influence they have had on the music scene since the sixties. Every back up singer you have ever heard or seen was in this movie and the history of songs we all know by heart, but we really don’t know the history of.
They interview both the original artists and the back-up singers themselves. In many cases we know the girls parts better than the actual songs. Those would be the hooks, the parts we all dredge up in our heads when a song from our past is played. If you love music you owe it to yourself to see this one.
