Is it my imagination or have the Oscars lost a little of their shine? I am sure you are thinking what does this have to do with being over sixty? It is not that I am one of those old people who think everything was better years ago, nope, I know everything was better! Okay, maybe not better, but different! I’ve wondered why this is not as wonderful as I remember? I have suspected that the reason OSCAR is not as I recall from years ago, is because the stars and the celebrities, are over exposed. First, let us not confuse celebrities with stars! A star would be a person who has talent and works at their craft! A celebrity, someone we are familiar with, but we are not sure why! I think the thrill of seeing a movie star one night a year, was in the fact that there was not a gaggle of award shows. We did not see them a daily basis at the supermarket check out line or on one of the Entertainment Tonight clones and they had an air of mystery. I am sure that they had the same sordid, drug fueled, tortured lives as today’s “stars”, but we didn’t have to know about it. And so, one night a year in March or April, we got to stay up late, and see people on our TV, in our living rooms that we only saw on the big screen. As with everything else, I can’t put my finger on just when this changed it just kind of crept up on us!
I started this particular blog a day or two after the awards, I stopped in the middle because it was beginning to sound like a cranky old person, which is so not me! I realize now that I’ve come back to it, after nursing a cold, that it is just a metaphor for all that is making our lives so negative. I am here at a computer, a marvelous invention that was to make all of our lives so much easier and in many ways it has. I can now google anything I can’t easily remember and get the information in seconds. I can see wonderful pictures of my friends and family, practically as they are taking them! Breaking news is only seconds away, but this all comes with a price.
I now have to sift through 20 or 30 e-mails just to get to one I actually want to read, I have to spend time I could put to better use forwarding chain letters, to ten or twenty people or be faced with some horrible curse! Then, I must send it back to the person who sent it to me. Does that mean we have to send it back and forth forever?
I guess my basic question would be, are we simply privy to Too Much Information or in text terms TMI? Has all this information made this a better world or do we now just know how bad things really are? I think this has just given me a topic for my next blog, so for now I’ll let you all ponder with me and start anew in the morning!
