How many of us ever give any real thought to fame these days? I think we are so de-sensitized to the concept, that infamy now passes as fame in our society! That being the case, what is the harm. I know the common reasons given are that some of our celebrities are famous for nothing at best, and for bad behavior at worst, setting a poor example for young people. But, what about us old people.
I know you are laughing to yourself, what mature adult would want to change places with Snooki? Or for that matter any of the extremely dysfunctional, “Housewives”, or “Octomom”. And let’s not get started on the Kardashians! When I was young there was an expression “Virtue is its own reward”, where has that gone? We were rewarded for not messing up; and now it would seem everyone is recovering from something and is applauded for their efforts. And, while I agree they can be supported for overcoming obstacles, what about the millions of people who didn’t mess up, didn’t ruin lives of family and friends and are now confronted with a world totally unlike, the one we knew. Where are the accolades for the rule followers?
I think now maybe somehow, I need to become famous just so people will know I was here! Will it be enough just to leave children and grandchildren to remember me or do I need to do something outrageous, just to BE. I have given thought to some crazy reality shows about older people in incongruous situations. Why can’t I have a seven million dollar third wedding to a famous old athlete. Having just seen Joe Namath discussing the Super Bowl, he comes to mind; or how about an “Amazing Race” to see who can enter every Ralph Lauren store in the world, buy something and arrive on Rodeo Drive first!!!!!!………….Or maybe a show with three or four 60 year olds “Taking Miami”, oops wasn’t that the Golden Girls. Ah, you get my point! Will I ever really BE, if I am not famous?
Gotta run now, must see if I can get on the cover of The Star or The National Enquirer before I die a total failure!!!!
